EV Charger Installation

Home and workplace EV charger installation by a qualified electrician across East Sussex.

About This Service

With electric vehicles becoming the norm rather than the exception, having a dedicated home charger is no longer a luxury, it's a practical necessity. A properly installed 7kW home charger will fully charge most electric vehicles overnight, far faster than a standard 3-pin socket. Benjamin Bailey Electrics installs a range of smart chargers from leading manufacturers, including tethered and untethered units with app control, load balancing, and solar integration.

Before any charger is installed, we carry out a full electrical survey. We check your consumer unit has capacity for a dedicated circuit, assess cable routes from the board to your parking location, and identify any earthing upgrades required. For older properties, we often need to install a PME earth electrode to meet DNO earthing requirements for EV charger installations, we handle all of this as part of the installation.

We install chargers at domestic properties and small commercial premises throughout the Forest Row area and across East Sussex. Grants are available for landlords, tenants in rented accommodation, and residents in flats — contact us to discuss current eligibility. All installations are completed to IET Code of Practice standards and tested and certified on completion.

How It Works

1

Site survey

We assess your consumer unit, earthing arrangement, cable route, and parking situation. We advise on charger placement and any preparatory work required.

2

Charger selection

We recommend the right charger for your vehicle, parking situation, and smart home preferences. We can supply and fit, or fit a unit you've already purchased.

3

Preparatory work

If required, we upgrade earthing arrangements, install a PME earth electrode, or carry out cable routing works before charger day.

4

Charger installation

We fit the charger unit, run a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, and connect and test the charger. Most installations take 3–4 hours.

5

Commissioning & documentation

We commission and test the charger, pair it with your vehicle and any smart app, and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charger speed do I need for home charging?

For most domestic installations, a 7kW (32A) single-phase charger is the sweet spot. It will charge a typical 60–80kWh battery from empty overnight. Three-phase 22kW chargers are available but require a three-phase supply, which most homes don't have.

Do I need planning permission for a home EV charger?

In most cases, no. Home EV chargers are permitted development. There are exceptions for listed buildings and some conservation areas, we can advise based on your specific property.

Can I charge my EV from a standard 3-pin socket?

Technically yes, but it's not recommended for regular use. A standard socket provides around 2.3kW, around three times slower than a 7kW dedicated charger. Long-term use of standard sockets for EV charging can also cause localised heating at the socket.

Are grants available for home EV charger installation?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant is available for businesses and charities. For renters in private accommodation, the LEVI Fund supports social housing installations. Homeowners in their own freehold property are not currently eligible for a homeowner grant. Contact us to check current eligibility for your situation.
