Lighting Installation & Design

Recessed downlights, feature lighting, outdoor security lights, and full lighting circuit installation.

About This Service

Good lighting transforms a room. Whether you're planning a kitchen renovation with integrated LED downlights, creating a warm atmosphere in a living room with dimmable feature lighting, or improving security with motion-activated outdoor lighting, Benjamin Bailey Electrics can design and install a lighting scheme that meets your practical needs and aesthetic vision.

We install all types of lighting circuits: recessed LED downlights (fire-rated where required), pendant and chandelier drops on ceiling roses, bathroom lighting to the correct IP rating for the zone, outdoor and garden lighting, security lights with PIR sensors, and low-voltage landscape lighting. We also carry out loft lighting, garage and outbuilding lighting, and feature lighting for stairs, hallways, and living spaces.

LED technology has transformed domestic lighting over the last decade. A well-planned LED scheme uses 75–80% less energy than an equivalent halogen installation and lasts far longer. We can advise on the best LED equivalents for your existing fittings or design a new circuit from scratch, including dimming controls that are compatible with LED loads.

How It Works

1

Consultation

We discuss your lighting goals (practical, aesthetic, or both) and advise on what's achievable within your space and budget.

2

Design

For larger projects, we produce a simple lighting plan showing positions, circuit layout, and switch locations.

3

First fix

Wiring is run before plastering or decoration. We core and chase where needed, working carefully to minimise surface damage.

4

Second fix

Fittings, switches, and dimmers are installed and all connections made. We test every circuit before leaving.

5

Sign-off

We issue an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate and leave you with a clean, tidy finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do recessed downlights need to be fire-rated?

Yes, if they're installed in a ceiling that separates habitable floors (e.g., between a ground-floor room and an upstairs bedroom). Fire-rated downlights maintain the fire resistance of the ceiling for 30–60 minutes and are required by Building Regulations.

Can I dim LED lights?

Yes, but not all LED bulbs and fittings are dimmable. Dimmable LEDs require a trailing-edge dimmer switch (not the standard leading-edge dimmers used for old halogens). We ensure all components are compatible before installation.

What IP rating do bathroom lights need?

Bathrooms have defined zones. Zone 0 (inside the bath or shower) requires IP67 or higher. Zone 1 (directly above the bath/shower) requires minimum IP44. Zone 2 (within 60cm of the bath) also requires IP44. We always install fittings rated for their specific zone.

Can you install outdoor lighting for my garden?

Yes, from simple motion-activated security lights to fully designed garden and landscape lighting. All outdoor wiring is run in SWA armoured cable or through conduit and suitably rated for outdoor use.
