Fault Finding & Repairs

Fast, methodical diagnosis and repair of electrical faults — from tripping circuits to dead sockets.

About This Service

Electrical faults can be frustrating, inconvenient, or downright dangerous. A circuit that keeps tripping, lights that flicker, sockets that are warm to the touch, a burning smell, or a total loss of power in part of the house, all of these demand proper investigation, not guesswork. Benjamin Bailey Electrics takes a methodical approach to fault finding, using calibrated test equipment to trace faults to their source rather than replacing components at random.

The most common faults we encounter are deteriorated cables with insulation breakdown (common in properties with original 1970s or earlier wiring), loose connections at sockets or light fittings (a fire risk that can be invisible until it's serious), overloaded circuits, nuisance tripping from appliances with earth current leakage, and water ingress causing short circuits. We trace each fault systematically and provide a clear explanation of what we found and why.

We're available 24/7 for genuine electrical emergencies, if you've lost power, have sparking, or can smell burning, don't delay. Call us and we'll get to you as quickly as possible. Non-urgent repairs can be booked at a time to suit you.

How It Works

1

Initial assessment

We ask about the symptoms, when the fault started, and what was happening when it first appeared. This helps narrow down the likely cause before we start testing.

2

Visual inspection

We check the consumer unit, affected accessories, and any visible wiring for signs of burning, loose connections, or physical damage.

3

Testing

We carry out targeted electrical tests (insulation resistance, loop impedance, RCD operation) to isolate the fault to a specific circuit or location.

4

Repair

Once the fault is found, we discuss the repair options with you and carry out the agreed work. Most repairs are completed in the same visit.

5

Test & certify

We re-test affected circuits after repair and issue a Minor Works Certificate or EICR as appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

My circuit keeps tripping, what's causing it?

Repeated tripping is usually caused by a faulty appliance drawing too much current, a deteriorated cable with reduced insulation resistance, or a wiring fault at a socket or fitting. We can identify which of these is the cause and fix it.

My sockets are dead but no circuits have tripped — what's wrong?

This usually indicates a broken cable (a nail through a cable is a common cause), a loose connection in a junction box or accessory, or a blown fuse in a fused connection unit. We'll trace the break with test equipment.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency callouts?

Yes. For genuine emergencies, loss of power, sparking, burning smells, we provide a 24/7 emergency callout service across Sussex, Surrey, Kent, and the surrounding area. Emergency rates apply outside normal hours.

How much does fault finding cost?

We charge a call-out fee plus hourly rate for fault finding. We'll always give you a clear idea of likely costs before we start and won't carry out repairs without your agreement on price.
